How Asset Classification Works
MACRS recovery periods are not assigned by common sense or asset price — they come from a specific lookup process in IRS Publication 946, Appendix B:
- Check Table B-2 first for a description of the activity your business is in (e.g., manufacturing, retail).
- If your asset is specifically listed under that activity in Table B-2, use that recovery period.
- Otherwise, check Table B-1 for a description of the asset itself, independent of activity.
- If nothing matches, the asset generally defaults to 7-year property (the general-purpose "catch-all" class).
Assets Commonly Classified as 5-Year Property
Based on Table B-1 descriptions, the following commonly fall into the 5-year GDS recovery class:
- Automobiles, taxis, and light-duty trucks (asset class 00.22)
- Computers and peripheral equipment (asset class 00.12)
- Office machinery such as typewriters, calculators, and copiers (asset class 00.13)
- Buses
- Breeding and dairy cattle
- Appliances, carpeting, and furniture used in residential rental real estate
- Certain property used in research and experimentation
- Qualified energy storage technology and certain qualified facilities placed in service after December 31, 2024, per recent IRS Publication 946 updates
Why This Matters
The recovery period determines both how many years you depreciate the asset and which MACRS percentage table applies. Misclassifying an asset as 5-year when it's actually 7-year property (or vice versa) produces an incorrect depreciation schedule from Year 1.
Calculate the Schedule
Once you've confirmed the recovery period, use the MACRS calculator to generate the full year-by-year depreciation schedule.
